The Prep + Presence Method

Great performance isn't about perfection. It's about truth.

The Prep + Presence Method is a two-phase approach that builds both technical confidence and emotional authenticity. It's how you stop performing and start connecting. How you own your humanity and master your craft.

Phase 1: Preparation

Preparation gives you confidence.

Understanding the Material How do you capture the author’s voice? What's the playwright's intent? The emotional truth beyond the words on the page—the subtext? Whether you're working on a book, monologue, or scene, understanding the larger context frees you to make informed choices.

Genre Mastery Different genres have different conventions—and knowing when to follow them and when to break them is crucial.

Character Development Create organic, authentic character voices based on emotions, not cartoon impressions. Learn to develop choices that are grounded in truth, distinct, and sustainable whether you're performing eight shows a week or nailing a single take.

Technical Skills Mic technique, vocal warm-ups, and understanding how to structure your recording day for maximum effectiveness. Voice and body work, breathing technique, spatial awareness, and understanding how to use the tools of your medium—whether that's a stage, a camera, or a self-tape setup.

Subtext & Analysis Mine the text for the truth beneath the surface. This is what the greats taught — Hagen, Meisner, Stanislavsky, Adler, Chubbock…different methods of achieving the same thing. We can even adapt these for audiobook narration.

When you've done thorough preparation, you're free to let go of the mechanics and be present with the material.

Phase 2: Presence

Presence gives you authenticity.

Emotional Availability Create the mental and emotional space to fully feel what you're playing or reading. Be ready to "skate the scene"—to ride the emotional terrain wherever it goes.

Letting Go of Perfection If you recorded this book or shot this scene next week, it would be totally different. Be available and honest today. Don't get hung up on details—those were worked out in prep.

Making Choices Trust your instincts. Make bold, committed choices.

Director vs. Actor Mindset For audiobooks, view yourself as the interpreter and guide, not just the performer. You're leading the listener through a journey.

Naturalism Over Formality Audiences connect with truth, not polish. Your authentic humanity is more valuable than an over-articulated bit of technical perfection that lacks emotional life.

Why This Works

The Prep + Presence Method develops what separates memorable performances from forgettable ones: thorough artistic preparation combined with authentic human presence.

In an age of shortcuts and surface-level technique, this approach builds actors who understand their craft deeply and perform truthfully. Your humanity—your ability to prepare thoughtfully and show up emotionally—is what makes you irreplaceable.
